When first hearing Roscoe Holcomb I felt like I couldn't take it all in at the same time. Everything sounded so perfect and primal. His banjo and guitar are offset so incredibly by his voice, then everything is charged intensely by his posture and expression. That face. If I could describe it I would.
I like that other guy's scratchy looking sweater, and how he seems so impossibly comfortable in it.
ReplyDeleteHow DID you first hear Mr. Holcomb?
ReplyDeleteWith the exception of his right foot and the occasional arm-twitch he looks very disinterested when he plays, like he has nothing to do with the music; it's just passing through him.
Beautiful.
I discovered him by digging through Smithsonian Folkways back catalogue. I think his name stood out to me, then once I saw a picture of him I figured he was worth listening to.
ReplyDeleteI like Pete Seeger's sweater too. I also like when he hovers over the banjo playing like a hungry hawk.
You all are brilliant.
